BETTINA STELLE
Bettina joined the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum as a board member in 1998. After earning a Master’s degree in Education and Anthropology from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, Bettina focused initially on working with young children that had behavioral issues. Later she worked in a museum in Zurich on educational programs for their young visitors.
Before she became a board member, she served with Linley Whelan, Barbara Lobosco and Dianne Brennan on a group called The Friends of the Whaling Museum. We curated shows including exhibits on the works of Cappy Amundsen, as well as one focused on the experience of Black Whalers. We also organized children’s events as well as the Annual Sag Harbor Clambake.
Over the years Bettina’s role as a board member expanded into that of a curator / advisor and organizer of shows and PR events and fairs for the museum. She also became a founding member of and director / curator of the Montauk Oceans Institute at the Montauk Lighthouse. She has been curating Ocean Preservation related shows there for the past seven years, a thematic connection to the Whaling Museum, that makes a lot of sense for her and that she enjoys very much.
The Whaling Museum is a place that has been very close to Bettina’s heart for the past 30 years and will remain so for the rest of her life.
