All this day calms.  The first part foggy.  At meridian cleared up some.  Saw one right whale; lowered and chased without success – going fast.

All this day calm and clear.  Saw 3 right whales; lowered and chased without success.  Engaged in mending sails…

Sat, Aug 31, 1844 (53.36 Lon 161.01 E)

… Steering on the wind under all sail.  Saw 5 ships.  At 7pm raised land.

Sun, Sep 1, 1844 (Lat 53.40 Lon 161.36 E)

This day clear and calm.  Land in sight all day, distant 50 miles.  Saw four sails; saw no whales except fin and humpbacks.

Mon, Sep 2, 1844 (Sun Invisible At Noon)

… Land in sight until noon.  At 3 pm saw 2 right whales; lowered and chased without success.

… At 10 am saw one right whale; lowered and chased without success.

Wed, Sep 4,1844 (Sun Obscure)

… Cruising all day. Saw nothing but finbacks.

Even for the Thames, this was a depressingly unproductive week. Will things get better?
