All this day thick foggy weather…

This day thick fog with light breezes…

Sat, Jun 8, 1844 (Lat 48.08 Lon 167.42 E)

This day somewhat foggy; clear two or three times at short intervals… Saw one right whale going fast.  Latter part brisk breezes.  Cleaned one head of bone.

Sun, Jun 9, 1844 (Lat 49.00 Lon 166.55 E)

This day thick until 9 a.m.  Cleared up some and made sail… Latter part breezes lighter.  Saw two or three humpbacks.  At 6 p.m. spoke and went on board of the ship Peruvian of New London – 8 months out with 350 bbls oil.  Heard such report of the death of Captain Hedges, our former captain.  At night took in sail.

Mon, Jun 10, 1844 (Sun Obscure)

… At daylight made sail, steering to the Northward and Eastward on the wind.  Saw two ships and two right whales, the Peruvian’s boats fast to one of them…



Tue, Jun 11, 1844 (Lat 49.16 Lon 167.27 E)

This day commences with fog and light breezes… At 8 a.m. came off clear.  Saw 8 right whales; lowered, chased and darted without fastening.  Chased till noon.  At 12:30 came in foggy; thick the rest of the day.

Wed, Jun 12, 1844 (Lat 49.12 Lon 167.20 E)

… At daylight made all sail… At 11 a.m. [the fog] cleared away.  Saw right whales; lowered and chased the rest of the day.  Whales very wild – could not get hold.  Saw one sail.  Saw 7 whales today.  At night took in sail.

 

Another hard week for the Thames.  Foggy weather making whaling impossible…  When the weather clears – no luck…  The Peruvian is nearby and catching whales… their original Captain has died.… Is the Thames turning out to be a cursed ship?  We shall see…
