…Saw 4 right whales.  Lowered and chased three times but no success. Whales very wild.

Fri, Sep 6, 1844 (No reading)

…Made all sail at daylight cruising for whales. Saw 8 or 10 right whales; lowered and chased three times without success.  At 6pm spoke the bark Bayard of Greenport. Boiling.  Has 2000 bbls oil.  Gammed  ‘til [midnight].  Saw another ship boiling.

One can only imagine the feeling of the Thames crew, seeing other ships have success while they have none…   It’s enough to drive a man mad.

This day somewhat thick and rainy, with stiff breezes. ..Bayard in company all day…

… At 10 am made sail.  Saw no whales but fin and humpbacks…At 6 pm spoke and gammed with the ship Tuscarora of Cold Spring – 2300 bbls oil.

This day clear and pleasant till noon… After part thick fog.  Gamming with the Bayard…

This day thick fog… Lying too all day.  At 3 pm came across the Bayard and Tuscarora. Gammed with them until night...
